Moustiers Sainte-Marie, faïence capital : three essential elements

Faïence : (from Faenza, Italy) soft, porous earthenware glazed with an impermeable enamel.


Water Moustiers’ first source of energy, water once powered many mills ( tannery, paper, oil, flour)	Earth Clay was mined from quarries near the village.	Wood The surrounding forests fuelled the pottery kilns.

Beautiful items from the 17th century to today are displayed in five rooms.

The pottery exhibit displays early and contemporary earthenware and various ceramic items.

In the projection room, a film relates the History of faïence in Moustiers and shows the different steps, from shaping to firing and decoration.
